How to check AI search visibility

To check AI search visibility, choose real customer questions, run them on the AI surfaces that matter, record each answer and its context, note business and competitor mentions, and repeat the same checks later. One answer is an observation, not a universal ranking.

A five-step AI visibility check

  • Choose questions that match a real buying decision, such as finding a category, service, or trusted provider.
  • Choose the Google and AI surfaces that your customers are likely to use.
  • Record the exact question, answer, citations, provider, model, location, and time.
  • Mark whether the business appeared, which competitors appeared, and which sources were cited.
  • Repeat an equivalent check later and compare only results with the same important context.

What should an AI visibility report record?

FieldWhy it matters
QuestionSmall wording changes can produce different answers.
Surface and modelChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity do not use one shared answer.
Market and timeLocation and collection time can change what appears.
Mentions and competitorsThis shows who appeared in the observed answer.
CitationsSources show which pages supported the answer when citations were available.
Missing or failed stateA failed check is not the same as a business not appearing.

What does one AI answer prove?

One answer proves what that surface returned for one question in one recorded context. It does not prove that every customer saw the same answer. Use several relevant questions and repeat equivalent checks to find patterns without hiding normal variation.
